Have you purchased or adopted a new dog? If so, you definitely deserve a pat on the back. Not everyone is kind enough to open their home to a wonderful animal that is in need of an owner. And, surely, you will be happy with your decision since a dog can provide a number of many great memories. However, it is also important to have realistic expectations about your new pet. Usually, there may be a few aspects to owning a dog you may not have been aware of.

First and foremost, it is important to realize that the dog will develop his own personality and will not present itself in a manner tailored to your expectations. Dogs are, after all, living creatures and their personalities are all unique and different. So, do not expect a particular breed of dog to display a specific personality trait. Once again, all dogs are unique and their personalities that will develop over time.

Soon after purchasing your new dog, you will discover the need to modify and tweak your weekly schedule. You will need to walk the dog, bathe it, and, of course, feed it. While this is more fun than it is hard work, it will require a certain commitment of time. That means you will need to alter your schedule from its normal patterns in order to weave your newfound responsibilities into the week. In time, you will get used to these changes and they can be performed with little effort. But, there will be a gestalt period required where you will need to adjust to the changes.

You will also need to expect a little bit of “bad” behavior. Actually, the behavior is not bad. It is simply a matter of the dog needing a little time to adjust to its new home. Things were different in the shelter and now the dog needs to adjust better to the new rules. Also, the newfound freedom the dog will experience can lead to the dog displaying a lot of energetic jumping around and playful behavior. Really, there is nothing wrong with this but it can be overwhelming to the new owner at first. But, fret not, the dog will calm down in a relatively short period of time once it gets used to its new surroundings.

Developing the skills needed to correct the dog’s behavior will be very important to those bringing home a new pet. Keep in mind correcting behavior never means you will need to punish the dog! There are many benign ways in which you can fix a dog’s behavior. Brushing up on the basics of owning a dog will be most helpful prior to purchasing a pet.

It is also helpful to expect to take the dog to the vet shortly after you purchase it. This is because the dog may have a few lingering health issues if it is a shelter animal. Sometimes, minor health problems are overlooked in a shelter so you need to be wary of them when you bring a new dog into your home. And, of course, you will need to take care of the problem in a timely manner as well.
