Without a doubt, the growth of internet commerce has certainly made it easier to purchase products and services. The sheer size and scope of the internet allows virtually every item available for sale to be acquired online. That is why the yearly sales figures of internet commerce are well into the billions of dollars. People simply find the ability to purchase online too good to pass up. But, is the deal always a good one? Actually, no it is not. There are always problems with any purchase and the online world is no exception. That is why it is important to take a ”Buyer Beware” attitude towards all online purchases.  That does not mean that you must ignore online purchasing offers. You simply need to be wary of any potential problems so you can avoid them if needed.

When purchasing online look to purchase from sites that offer the ability to purchase from PayPal.com. This is always a much safer option that using a credit card. PayPal has so many built in security functions that it is next to impossible to improperly charge anyone. If you do use a credit card, try to stick with those sites that are major names in the business. Amazon.com will certainly not abuse your credit card information and neither will any major, established business. Also, these sites encrypt all credit card information which makes it impossible for hackers to steal the information. So, as a rule, always be on the lookout for sites that do not offer proper encryption of data.

It is critically important to be wary of any site that comes with a subscription offer with a free trial period. Consumer complaint sites are loaded with reports of free trial offers that came with the inability to cancel or tons of other hidden fees. Many of these fly by night offers can be clearly identified through their over the top and gaudy ad campaigns. It is definitely advised to avoid such sites at all costs!

Understanding the return policy of the online vendor is important as well. If you purchase clothing and it doesn’t fit, will you be able to make a quick return? Will the vender pay for the return postage? Will you get all of your money back or a portion of it? Will the payment be timely? These are all things that need to be seriously weighed when making certain purchases.  Remember, not all purchases turn out to be what you expected so always be sure the return policy is honest and feasible.

Be very wary of any website that does not offer a customer contact number. Emails and instant messaging is not enough. If a problem occurs, you will want to deal with someone on the phone. That is why it is best to avoid making purchases from sites that offer no phone customer contact. It is also best to be wary of websites that provide numbers to outsourced customer service centers since there are no decision makers to be found at such centers. As such, they will be very limited in how they can resolve a problem.
